Metabolic/ Diabetic Surgery
What is Metabolic Surgery?
In addition to weight loss, bariatric surgery can significantly improve type II diabetes & hypertension amongst a variety of other medical conditions. Metabolic surgery is the application of bariatric procedures (adjustable sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass etc..) for the metabolic benefits that the procedures offer.
How Does Metabolic Surgery Improve Diabetes?
Metabolic surgery is a recommended and scientifically proven option to treat Type 2 Diabetes patients with class III obesity (BMI>40kg/m2) & class II obesity (BMI 35.0-39.9kg/m2). All BMI thresholds are reconsidered depending on the ancestry of the patient. For example for patients of Asian descent the BMI values above should be reduced by 2.5kg/m2. Given its success rate & appeal, metabolic surgery or diabetic surgery is the most chosen surgical option for the management of Type2 Diabetes.
